Coastal Garden
Sydney St., Cambridge
Nestled in Cambridge Port, this garden was designed to evoke the natural landscape of outer Cape Cod. With its sandy soil, abundant sunlight, and exposure to wind and salt, the conditions were right for a maritime garden. Composed entirely of plants native to Massachusetts, this group of species co-evolved together and are highly resilient. To complete the beach-inspired ambiance, we fashioned a sunken sand area furnished with Adirondack chairs, inviting the client to unwind, connect with the coastal spirit, and sink their toes in the sand.
Indian Grass resembles the look of dune grass. A Beach Plum and Red Cedar shrub grow beyond.
Blue Grama Grass is infused with orange bursts of Butterfly Weed.
Perennials are planted densely to negate the need for regular mulching.
The garden begins to fill out in its second year.
Beach Plums are ripe when they turn a purple-blue color.
Pearly Everlasting is striking.
Virginia Rose has a lovely fragrance.
Planting the last of the perennial plugs.
Installation day, before the garden filled out.
In addition to drawings, we practice onsite design to make adjustments on planting day.
